At Home Flow Testing! | Holley 850 Baseplate On A 600 Main Body | Carburetor Performance Mods! | XMC
We are finally done customizing and modifying out project XMC holley 600cfm carburetor to accept an 850cfm baseplate! That is a huge difference in throttle size!
We are also finally using the 3d printed carburetor to vacuum adapter made for me by @thejunkyardnecromancer about 2 years ago 😂
Were we are able to hook a carburetor up to a vacuum to make a home made flow bench! Then we put a little dry ice in a watering can and boom we have smoke! Now we can see what is actually happening to the airflow in real time.

    • @newguysgarage6802
      @newguysgarage6802 День назад

      It would operate the same way the stock shifter would. So you would want to change out the valve body in the transmission to take full advantage of this kind of shifter, and you would want to anyway if its a performance build 🙂

      @@newguysgarage6802 what other choice could there be? Unless you changed to a PRND21 valve body wouldn't it be impossible to use with "stock" transmission, as "drive" ( green dot) can't be attached to the correct linkage? Basically can you physically swap 2nd and Drive at shifter?

    • @newguysgarage6802
      @newguysgarage6802 День назад

      @@daveshirley6739 the shifter operates just like the stock one does, the stick on the left is your standard PRND21 (or whatever configuration your valve body is) And the other two sticks simply move the main stick around. It is cable operated, so you can install it no problem and it will function just like any other aftermarket shifter would. The valve body configuration though would mean you wouldn't be able to use it the way it was intended. You can manually shift a green dot valve body but it takes some getting used to, start off in L (1st) then when you shift to 2nd just as you put it in the second notch bring it back down to L (1st) that will keep it in second, then when you want to shift to 3rd just bring it back up to the second notch and it will shift to third. At that point you can move it up to the third notch. I got pretty good at it but ultimately I changed my valve body lol

    Using a 3310-1 base plate on a 600 main body, using the 3310-1 center pivots and metering plates mounted on a A code 289 with J code heads that have been worked over with larger valves. The 850-950 base plates are the biggest base plates you can get for that series of carburetors

    • @newguysgarage6802

      3310-1 that should be a 750 baseplate right? A 750 baseplate on a 600 main body is actually what a regular 650 holley combo is lol. But they just chamfer the very bottom of the bore to fit the baseplate, Not blend it all the way up to the venturi opening 🙂. I wanted to go with the 850-950 baseplate because like you said it was the biggest one so we could see what that changes on the flow bench 😃

      @@newguysgarage6802 had to chamfer the bottom of the bores on the 600 main a little bit, actually a substantial amount, but not as much as you had to with 850-950 base plate. Carb has excellent low speed characteristics, I’d say it flows 700-725 cfm with the air horn removed. Would like to install some nicer boosters in it so signal is enhanced even more. Air flow vs volume sometimes can be in your favor for small CID engines, higher reving smaller ports, more turbulence in the combustion chambers ….

Now I recently changed that with shorty’s and SPD catted y pipe and I gained 15-30 hp on the low end. Noticeable difference on acceleration. Which with the LTH’s it felt sluggish until the rpm band increased.

    In high school auto shop class, (1977-78) it was called venturi vacuum (ported)..It is caused by those round things hanging out in the middle of the carb. They create the vacuum that sucks the fuel out of the float bowl to be dispensed at those rings and down the throat ...In WOT, air is flowing down the venturi and vacuum is created..In WOT, you have ZERO manifold vacuum but will have plenty of venturi vacuum. So under heavy acceleration, venturi vacuum will give you advance, but you get nothing in regards to advance from the manifold vacuum..

    • @newguysgarage6802

    • @MichaelJohnson-cm4wp
      @MichaelJohnson-cm4wp 6 дней назад

      @@newguysgarage6802 On a Holley carb with vacuum secondaries, where does that vacuum come from to open the vacuum secondaries?? In WOT if the manifold and the ported vacuum are the same, (Zero) then the secondaries would not open.. The venturi vacuum is the source of the fuel being drawn in from the float bowl and the ported(venturi) vacuum...that opens the secondaries.. Run some compressed air into the ported vacuum tube and you will feel air around the annular rings.. As more air is drawn in down the throat of the carb, the more effect of the venturi vacuum is created..More air. more vacuum and more fuel down the throat.. That is why when you were blipping the throttle on ported vac., you got a vacuum reading..Air was being forced down the annular rings, creating vacuum..

    • @MichaelJohnson-cm4wp
      @MichaelJohnson-cm4wp 6 дней назад

      @@newguysgarage6802 I stand corrected..It is not the annular rings but it is the side walls where the rings are located..as more air passes downward, those side walls will create vacuum..the "venturi effect"..ported vacuum is drawn from those side walls..On the primary side of the carb as the throttle is open, more and more(faster) air in drawn in..creating more vacuum..Finally enough to overcome the spring in the vacuum actuator to open the secondary butterflies..

    • @newguysgarage6802
      @newguysgarage6802 6 дней назад

      @MichaelJohnson-cm4wp well first off the vacuum doesn't drop to zero at WOT lol It will drop down to anywhere between .5 - 2.5in depending on how restrictive your carburetor is. Ported vacuum gets its vacuum from a port just above the throttle blades, manifold vaccum will usually have a port on the carburetor that is just below the throttle blade. Once you open the throttle blades up then the two equalize and become the same. Now if your talking about a vacuum secondary carb (which.....if we are talking about performance you wouldn't be 😂) But if you were then the vacuum canister for the secondarys operate on there own port...not on the ported vacuum port. There is a little hole on the side of the venturi opening that it draws from, not from out of the booster lol.
